Mark David Chapman shot John Lennon in the back, killing him on the spot on December 8, 1980; the venue of the crime: Dakota Apartments where Lennon was living. JD Salinger’s Catcher In The Rye was the inspiration, whilst he began to identify with Catcher protagonist, Holden Caulfield, after reading the book. (In the book, Caulfield saunters aimlessly in the streets of New York stirred by the hollowness he finds all around him.) The trigger was Lenon preaching not to crave for possessions, whilst he himself had millions of dollars and yachts and farms and country estates.
