Last weekend BMW the biggest automobile giant launched the i8 plug-in sports car — and did it in style. The German Automaker and Jay Leno teamed up for an auction at the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, and ended up selling out the one of a kind i8 for $825,000.
The i8 ‘Concours d’Elegance Edition’ was face-lifted by using a rare colouring scheme. The color used on the outside was ‘Individual Frozen Grey Metallic’ while the interior was Dalbergia Brown leather. To bump up its inside looks it received: iBlue accenting, ‘Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Edition’ laser etchings and ‘BMW i8’ embossed front headrests.
This model deploys laser headlight technology, however, approval of this technology is still pending with the US government. BMW, to be on the safe side, communicated it could be retrofitted once the delivery was made if needed.
The company got away with selling the car off for a whopping $825,000 when the Gooding and Company finally dropped the gavel. The money collected from the auction will be handed over to the Pebble Beach Company Foundation that is responsible for raising funds for Monterey County Youth and also distributes athletics, arts, environmental sciences, educational and community grants.
The BMW i8 plug-in hybrid is fitted with a a 360 hp powertrain that works synchronically between a rear driven 1.5 liter turbo 3-cylinder engine and front driven electric motor. Thus, the car is capable of generating enough power to accelerate from 0 to 60 Mph in 4.2 seconds. The car is also enabled for zero-emissions driving for up to 20 miles. The concept of the car took five years to convert into a real thing.
